Understanding A2L Refrigerant

New Refrigerant Guidelines

Below we outline the upcoming changes in air conditioner and heat pump refrigerant regulations starting January 1, 2025:

Phase-Out of R410A

New systems using R410a refrigerant cannot be manufactured or imported after this date, but existing R410a systems can still be installed throughout 2025.

Future of R410A

It will remain in use for repairs and replacements for a long time. Replacement of outdoor units alone can still use R410a if available. Full system replacements will require new refrigerants.

New Refrigerants

Two alternatives, R32 and R454B, will replace R410a. Both are slightly (~15%) more expensive, and new systems will cost more initially.

Impact on Consumers

Minimal immediate impact is expected as R410a will remain popular and affordable for years. Prices for new refrigerants will eventually drop as they become standard.

Recommendations

For long-term homeowners, invest in new refrigerant systems. For short-term needs or cost savings, stick with R410a systems before the December 31st, 2025 deadline.
